In 2024, we read critical theory on fashion, spoke to filmmaker Amandine Gay about developing an Afro-feminist aesthetic, watched tango in Buenos Aires, and visited reclusive painter Huong Dodinh to chat about getting gallery representation in her seventies. These, along with so many other wonderful conversations and recommendations, sustained us this year.
As the holidays and the end of the year approach, passerby will be taking a break until January 7th (though we’ll share reflections on the year from our community on New Year’s Eve). We'll return ready to start the new year with more interviews, recommendations, and events.
Whether you're spending time with family or friends or taking some time to yourself, we hope the next few weeks provide an opportunity for you to rest and reflect.
If you’re already a member of the passerby club, thank you for your support. You’re the reason we can keep doing what we do. This year, we hosted free screenings of Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense, Sing Sing, My First Film, Bird, and Babygirl for our paid subscribers.
We brought on new partners to the passerby club, giving our partner-level subscribers discounts to KYE Intimates, Spencer’s Spa (40% off!), GEMSUM, Aplós, Swedish Stockings, Metrograph, Café Forgot, and The Breakfast.
And on our Discord, our private community for our paid subscribers, we chatted about Shelia Heti’s oeuvre and favorite fashion books, recommended LED masks and comfortable but chic heels, and helped each other find new doctors and new apartments. Member
described our Discord as a "Craigslist made up of your cool and stylish Instagram mutuals… you can find New York and Paris (and elsewhere) sublets in the best neighborhoods that are furnished by people who get paid well for their good taste, and which aren't found on, say, Facebook marketplace because the generally tight-knit nature of the group means a trusted renter base.”If you want to support passerby as we move into the new year, join the passerby club, gift a subscription to a loved one, or make a one-time contribution to help us on our mission to spotlight stories not typically told.
